The Grand Reopening of the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts

The Conservation Center often assists museums, institutions, foundations, and non-profit organizations with conserving and caring for their collections. In addition to comprehensive conservation services, The Center's team assists with long-term preservation planning, digitization of archives and historical documents, creation of custom displays, packing and transportation, and long-term storage of collections. Over the past two years, The Center has worked with the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts (AMFA) on several conservation projects while their building underwent an expansion and renovation campaign, partnering with renowned architecture firm Studio Gang to design their new facility.

"Art is Timeless. A Work of Art, Not So Much" The Riv Magazine (story by Jeff Wing)

"Art is Timeless. A Work of Art, Not So Much" The Riv Magazine (story by Jeff Wing)

Heather Becker was studying on a scholarship at the International School of Art in Monte Castello di Vibio, Italy. One day, her class took a field trip to another rustic little village whose name, by contrast, comprises a single, gonglike syllable: Rome. “I remember we entered a chapel, and there was a conservator up on scaffolding,” she says. “She was working on something.” Becker was so immediately rapt, her traveling companions began gently nudging her. She asked around and joined the conservator on her scaffold. “I just became completely mesmerized by what she was doing.”

The Ethics of Appraisers and Conservators

The Ethics of Appraisers and Conservators

When we say we treat items of all kinds at The Conservation Center, we truly mean it. Whether a noteworthy painting by a blue-chip artist or a purely sentimental artwork by a client's child, the team at The Conservation Center always provides quotes for treatment based on time and materials, never considering the item's market value. A conservator should never assign value and always refer clients to independent appraisers with appraisal questions. Some wonder why this is, and the answer is the conservator code of ethics.

Ethics in Conservation

The Conservation Center's dedication to the long-term preservation of artworks and heirlooms reaches far beyond the walls of our laboratory. Since 2007 we have published our educational newsletter monthly, sharing hundreds of conservation stories with our subscribers. We also believe in sharing our experience and expertise with professionals whose work intersects with conservation. Through lectures, learning modules, and podcasts, our goal is to help prepare insurance professionals for the day they respond to a claim that includes fine art. We are proud to collaborate with The Property & Liability Resource Bureau (PLRB) to provide their members with continuing education opportunities and would like to share one of those topics with you - Ethics in Conservation.

Planning is Everything: Preparing for Disaster

Planning is Everything: Preparing for Disaster

President Dwight Eisenhower once said, "Plans are worthless, but planning is everything. There is a very great distinction because when you are planning for an emergency you must start with this one thing: the very definition of "emergency" is that it is unexpected, therefore it is not going to happen the way you are planning."

The team at The Conservation Center couldn't agree more. Disaster preparedness plans are often modified the moment they are put into action. Still, we know from years of experience that those who plan for likely scenarios are better positioned to respond to the unexpected.

A Community Comes Together: The Fisher Foundation Project Part 1

In 2014, a small group of volunteers in Marshalltown, Iowa, met to discuss the restoration of the Fisher Community Center Art collection, which had been untouched since the 1960s. The artworks were in desperate need for repair, care, and cataloguing, so the group set to work filing for grants and hiring specialists to help.

Timeless Techniques: Treating a Gilded Mirror

Timeless Techniques: Treating a Gilded Mirror

The Center's Gilding Department specializes in the preservation of frames and objects with gold, silver, and metal leaf applied to the surface. A wonderful example of the type of projects our Gilding Conservators frequently undertake recently came to us in the form of a mirror in need of conservation.

Gellan Gum: It's Not for Chewing!

Gellan Gum: It's Not for Chewing!

Here at The Center, we are always eager to study new methods of treating objects and learn about advancements in the field. That is why we were honored to host the Chicago Area Conservation Group’s Gellan Gum Mini-Workshop on March 13th. The Chicago Area Conservation Group (CACG) is a local group whose purpose is to promote learning and exchange ideas among those interested in or responsible for the preservation of artwork and archives of all kinds.

Protecting Paper: An Illustrated Guide to Sink Mats

Protecting Paper: An Illustrated Guide to Sink Mats

A housing technique commonly used at The Center: Creating a sink mat to house paper pieces. Below, Toby Joyce, Director of Conservation Framing, demonstrates the technique:

The paper piece is carefully situated on top of the supporting mount board with an engaged stepped mat. Weights are used to hold down the paper, and ensure that the piece is centered through to the final step.
